Bela Petheo was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1934. In 1959, he immigrated to the United States. 

He studied at the University of Chicago before coming to St John's University in Collegeville Minnesota as an artist-in-residence in 1966. He married Kathleen Benko in 1970. She is the subject of this painting.

Bela Petheo died in 2017
