The Swastika, or Svastika, is a symbol over two-thousand years old that has a variety of styles, meanings, and roots in many different cultures. The symbol has ties of great antiquity to countless regions of the world like India, Scandinavia, China, and Peru. The term Swastika is derived from Sanskrit, meaning “so be it” and the symbol is described to be “the accumulation of lucky signs possessing ten thousand efficacies.” In 19th century China, where this pair of chairs was made, the symbol was commonly added as decoration to designs and furniture to represent well being, luck, and the Buddha.
